Application context
Founded in 1906 by Luigi Nervi, the "Cantina Nervi" is the oldest wine-growing area of the Gattinara DOCG. With a total area of almost thirty hectares at the base of Monte Rosa, it was taken over in April 2018 by Roberto Conterno, winemaker at the helm in the Langa of the Giacomo Conterno winery.
Roberto Conterno has enriched the ancient winemaking reality of Gattinara DOCG, designing a winery in which architecture and cutting-edge technology are perfectly aligned with the know-how of the Conterno house.
The renovation and expansion under the direction of the Primatesta architectural studio, have given life to a spectacular winery, demonstrating, with Conterno's guidelines, that the future can never be separated from respect for history: wood, transparency, suspended tasting rooms and room of aging of only large barrels. The project is inspired by the work of the engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, known in the 1920s for his extraordinary grid constructions.
The flagship is the tasting room attached to the roof structure. Its glass walls open up a 360° view.
Last but not least, Cucine Nervi: inside the old cellar, the rooms that were used as shops and offices have been redeveloped for the new restaurant led by local chef Alberto Quadrio.
Client’s Requests
Wines need particular care in conservation, requiring different temperature and humidity zones. The needs of production must, in this particular project, meet those of welcoming guests for tastings and food and wine hospitality.
